Join us for a beginner-friendly sock knitting class where you will learn the fundamental techniques of crafting your very own pair of cozy socks! Perfect for those new to the world of sock knitting or those of you who are interested in refining your sock knitting skills.  This class will provide hands-on guidance and foundational skills you'll need to kickstart your sock knitting journey.

Class Highlights (Skills you will learn):

  • Introduction to Materials: Understand the basics about knitting needles (DPNs, circulars, magic loop, flexi-needles), types of yarn suitable for socks, and other essential tools.

  • Anatomy of a Sock: Familiarize yourself with the different parts of a sock including the cuff, leg, heel flap, heel turn, gusset, foot, and toe.

  • Reading a Sock Pattern: Break down a basic sock pattern to understand its structure and instructions.

  • Casting On: Learn the technique to start your sock with a stretchy cast on, essential for a comfortable fit.

  • Knitting in the Round: Grasp the methods of knitting socks using double-pointed needles or circular needles.

  • Heel Techniques: Dive into the intricacies of crafting a heel, from the heel flap to the heel turn.

  • Foot Length: Learning the math involved in knitting a cozy fitting sock.

  • Shaping the Toe: Get a grip on decreasing stitches to shape the toe, and finish with the Kitchener stitch for a seamless closure.

  • Tips and Troubleshooting: Discuss common challenges faced by beginners and learn practical tips to overcome them.

By the end of this class, participants will have a solid understanding of the sock knitting process, and have a single sock to start their sock knitting journey. With a bit of practice, the student will be on their way to creating their very own pair of hand-knitted socks. Whether you're knitting for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this class will set you on a path to creating beautiful, wearable art.

Skills you already need to have: Students need to be able to cast on and off, know knit and purl stitches and basic decreases, like knit two together and slip slip knit.

Materials to bring to the first class:

  • Pattern:  Vanilla Socks by Crazy Sock Lady, available on Ravelry - purchase just the pattern for your preferred needle type (DPNs, Magic Loop, or 9" circulars) for $2 or buy all three patterns for $5

  • Yarn:  284-459 yards of fingering weight yarn, you can use leftovers of mini skeins if you desire a multi-color look

  • Needles: appropriate for your yarn, if you are a tight knitter, I recommend US 2, otherwise US1. Participants can choose Magic Loop, DPNs, or 9” circulars.
